Marriage Support: Matthew 19:4-12

“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

On many occasions in my marriage, I wanted to give up.  Read Matthew chapter 19 focusing on verses 4-12.  This will help you to understand that you should not let man (including yourself) separate your marriage if God put it together.  Here’s some helpful tips that helped me:

1. Focus on God and not your spouse.  You can’t change people but God can.  He can change someone’s heart by the time you snap your finger.
   • Pray and give God 100% of your troubles.  This is easier said than done.  Once you give it ALL to him, you must let it go and let God work it out.  If you see no changes, it might be that you gave 99%.  Evaluate and give the entire 100% to God.  Stop worrying about it, talking to others about it, and trying to help God by adding your input.
   • Rejoice that God is going to work it out.
   • I did this and WOW, God turned it around and took my marriage to another level.  It took me years to figure this out.
2. Communicate from a Love perspective.  Many times we put so much trust in people.  And when they fail us, we are so disappointed and heart broken.  God said to trust in him and love people.  Remember that you married this person and that you love them.  Have compassion and let love take over.  Keeping that love in your heart will help you to forgive.  If God gives you mercy, why can’t you give the same to your spouse?  If you’re still having a difficult time with this, go back to point number 1 and let God take care of it!
3. Work with the changes.  As the years passes, your views may change.  You or your spouse may become more spiritual, values and goals may change, and you may start adding children.  Remember, that just because you’re ready for the change doesn’t mean your spouse is ready and that’s okay.  If you’re still having a difficult time with this, go back to point number 1 and let God take care of it!
